The far-left terrorist organization known as the Shining Path used Ayacucho as its base for its campaign against the Peruvian government, even staging an assault on the Ayacucho prison in 1982. Terrorist groups like the Shining Path and Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement were also centered in Lima during this time.
