The Huaihai Campaign, a decisive engagement of the Chinese Civil War, saw the Communist People's Liberation Army achieve a significant victory near Bengbu in 1948. Earlier in the conflict, Liaoyuan was a focal point of intense fighting between the Communist and Nationalist forces until its permanent capture by the Communists in the summer of 1947.
