The actions of General William Tecumseh Sherman profoundly affected both South Carolina and Vinings, Georgia. Sherman's troops marched across South Carolina, devastating plantations and most of its capital, Columbia. In Georgia, the Union Army occupied the Vinings area during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign and subsequent March to the Sea.
