In 1738, Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, sieur de La Vérendrye, built Fort Rouge on the site of Winnipeg, the first fur-trading post there. In September that same year, the French-Canadian explorer also built Fort La Reine north of the Assiniboine River, on what is now Portage la Prairie.
