The French-Canadian explorer and fur trader Pierre Gaultier de Varennes established trading posts in both Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie. He built Fort Rouge on the site of Winnipeg in 1738, and later that year, he also built Fort La Reine north of the Assiniboine River near Portage la Prairie.
