Wakayama sits at the center of ancient Kii Province and is home to the Iwase-Senzuka Kofun Cluster, one of the largest groups of kofun burial mounds in Japan. Nishinomiya, on the site of ancient Settsu Province, also has many kofun burial mounds within its city limits.
