The first large Jewish ghetto in Europe during World War II was set up in Piotrków Trybunalski on 8 October 1939, followed by the Lodz Ghetto and the Warsaw Ghetto. In Kraków, the creation of the Kraków Ghetto forced ethnic Polish families out of their homes, and later Nazi Operation Reinhard deported Jews to extermination camps.
