The Soviet 1st Ukrainian Front liberated Wieluń on 19 January 1945 during the Sandomierz Silesian Offensive near the end of World War II. Zalishchyky was liberated a second time by the same 1st Ukrainian Front on 24 March, after which survivors and deportees returned home.
