Held on the night before May 1 with bonfires and parties meant to scare away witches, this old European festival is celebrated in local versions in Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia, plus much of the Baltic and Nordic region. What is it called?
Walpurgis Night (called Walpurgisnacht in German) is named after Saint Walpurga, a missionary who lived in the 700s. It falls on April 30, exactly six months from Halloween. Local versions are celebrated across Northern and Central Europe, including in Slovakia and Slovenia, and in Germany's Harz mountains big parties are still held on the Brocken peak.
