Several West African countries have been dropping French as their official language. Burkina Faso did it in 2024, and Niger did it in 2025. Which neighbouring country started this trend in 2023?
Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have been working together as the Alliance of Sahel States since 2023. All three switched French from being the official language to just a "working language", and they lifted up their own local languages instead.
