The 'Periplus of the Erythraean Sea' is a 2,000-year-old Greek-Roman guidebook about trading ports around the Indian Ocean. It calls the port of Varkala in Kerala 'Balita'. Which port on the other side of India, in Gujarat, sacred to Krishna, does the same book call 'Baraca'?
Dwarka sits at the tip of the Kathiawar peninsula in western India and is one of Hinduism's four most important pilgrimage places. The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea calls it 'Baraca', and calls the Kerala port of Varkala 'Balita'. Old Roman coins have been found near Dwarka, showing the Periplus was right about the busy trade between Rome and India.
