Emmitsburg, Maryland is home to the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. Stockbridge, Massachusetts has a similar structure at the Shrine of The Divine Mercy. Both replicate which famous French pilgrimage cave where Bernadette Soubirous reported Marian apparitions in 1858?
Replicas of the Lourdes grotto (the natural cave where Bernadette Soubirous saw visions of the Virgin Mary in 1858) sprang up around the Catholic world in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Emmitsburg's shrine, dating to 1875, is one of the oldest in North America.
