Kryvyi Rih has two Soviet-era socialist-realist monuments to this Ukrainian national poet, and in central Cherkasy, the mid-19th-century Tsybulsky House opened in Soviet times as a museum of his single book 'Kobzar'. Which writer is being described?
Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) was a Ukrainian poet, writer and artist whose collection 'Kobzar' (1840) is regarded as a foundational work of modern Ukrainian literature. Born a serf, he was freed with help from Russian artists and later exiled for his radical politics; monuments to him stand in cities across Ukraine and abroad.
